Airfields app

Highlights

The ultimate list of worlwide airfields in one app. From the largest international airports to small grass fields and helipads. And with an ever expanding list of the best spotting locations, hotels and other places of interest, this app will be the best help during any spotting trip.

The app is ideal for the travelling aircraft spotter, not only to easily find each and every airfield in the world, but also to find the best spots to watch the planes. The list of spotting locations, restaurants and hotels is not complete, but growing every day.

All data is stored inside the app in a local database, meaning that you can also use the app without a network connection (the map will not load in that case). Local data is synced with the server on a daily bassis, so every newly added spotting location will show up quickly.

How to use

Sign in with your Spottingmode account to view seen planes marked in yellow and to sign all comments and additions with your username.

View airfields

All airfields are loaded onto the map as you scroll around. Click on a pin to view more information about the airfields and click through on the 'more info' button to view all the details.

Which airfields show up on the map is controlled by zoom level and the settings. The more zoomed in the map is, the more smaller airfields are shown. And helipads, grassfields, as well as closed airfields are only shown if selected in the settings.

Search for an airfield

The app has different ways to search for an airfield. On the main page a quick search can be made on airfield name or code, while more extensive search options are available though the dedicated search page. This includes also filtering on airport type and status.

Additionally, a browse option is available to sift through all airports per country, in a few cases further divided by state.

Get there

This app does not provide a built in navigation system. However, besides displaying the coordinates of each airport, it does provide an option to start navigation with other apps on your device. Click on a start navigation button to send a request to whichever navigation app you have installed. The request will include the precise coordinates, so you do not even have to copy the data. This allows for direct navigation to each airfield, spotting location, parking and hotel

Use offline

All airfields and associated locations are stored in a local database and can be used offline. The app will regularly check for updates to keep the database up to date, no user interaction is needed for that.

The map itself can only load with a connection, but all airfields can be viewed at any time and all browse and view options are available. Spotting locations, parkings and hotels are also stored in the local database, so even starting a navigation through other installed apps is possible offline.

Add a spotting location

New spotting locations, restaurants and hotels can be added through the map tab of the specific airfield. Just select the airfield, then the map tab and then click on the plus sign in the top right corner. Move the map so the exact spot will be underneath the cross hairs, save it and add as much additional info as possible (and relevant). Every location will be evaluated before it will appear on the map. All info is appreciated!

But also already existing locations will change from time to time. Please use the comments to share any additional or new info that may be relevant to other users. All comments will be used to update the spotting locations where needed. In the comments you can always savely use the spotting location's number, these numbers will not change over time.
